When I put the temperature up in the morning to get some heat that works great. In the afternoon I turn down the temperature to its coolest setting. Then I turn on the AC. Hot air blows out. Then when I push the automatic button the AC starts working. What is going on?

Bad humidity sensor, or blend door motor.

Easier to start with the sensor. It's part of the rearview mirror.

Since you're troubleshooting, try an aftermarket sensor. The OEM is almost $100. If it fixes the issue, buy an oem part.
