So if this turns out to be the stolen 2074 what happens now? I'm sure the original owner has already been paid for his loss. Can they change the VIN back so the owner now (if not the thief) will have everything corrected?

I would think it will go back to Insurance company and receive a new vin from whatever state the insurance company is in or the one it was last registered in and sold at auction.
Yup...then the insurance company sends it to a salvage auction....but somebody went through a hell of a lot of trouble to resell this thing..and did a sloppy job as well...to steal a Demon..and try to sell it in this day of information..is almost impossible...even bought at a salvage auction..and trying to register it (in any state)..would be an absolute nightmare..

I don't know why it would get a salvage title. If the VIN was just changed why couldn't it get changed back? Someone or many will lose money because of it being a salvage title when there may be no reason for it
I never understood why some cars with a dented fender get a salvage title
All theft vehicles get a salvage title status (in Texas anyway). I have purchased motorcycles from Arizona that had salvage titles and when I registered them in Texas I got a clear blue title.
I would be really careful this could come back against your buddy and his shop will be burned down. Need to think this thru because your buddy will be called out. May want to have some time slide by with any investigation to protect your Friend. And sure he should look into how it is handled and then make the decision on how fast or slow.
