I was just working in our paint shop yesterday:cool:
Never gets old watching the assembly process, still amazes me every day how all the right parts come together at the exact time they're needed...really cool!!

Although it was annoying me when they kept trying to tuck those hoses out of the way, in the assembly process they are hanging like that for a reason and might get missed if they're not hanging out.
Believe me if something is out of whack it will throw the people or even the machines off!!

As a tool maker it is my job to make sure the fixturing and equipment holds all the components in the correct positions for assembly whether it be a simple bracket or the entire engine assembly, the hood or window glass or just the final fender emblems and it can be a real fight to keep it all 100% accurate when you have 100's of machine and fixtures along with the 1000's of people in the process.

It still amazes me how vehicles get put together today.

Seems like a million things can go wrong but don't ...

VERY cool job you got there Bobo.

I imagine it all starts with the Gates and tool Jig when first laying the stamped floor pans if it’s off even the slightest it will ricochet down the whole line. Guess it’s like a house foundation that everything else is built up off of.

And to think those side gates at Hamtramick, Lynch Road etc were all spot welded in the side gates by man with many hanging Spot Welding apparatus, all while being able to hold tolerances with high production output back then.

Bobo what kind of tolerance overall on the tools/Jig are they trying to hold on the assembly line for body shell. Is it declared precision Sheet metal work, and when setting up do they use robotic multi axis for X,YZ, Dimensioning with central hub reference to build off of. Laser CNC coordinates or contact via CNC ?

We adjust to a standard tolerance of +/- .05mm for alignment of panels and all of the panels are then set and welded with robots and fixturing.
a person will load panels from racks into fixturing then the 1000 robots we have in body shop align and weld all the components into the full BIW
We don't do the stamping portion in our body shop, they come in racks from stamping shop then we assemble all the pieces into a full body and then the finished vehicle out the door at the end.

I like how you put BIW “Body In White” above. I was reluctant to reference it that way as some here might have thought I am color blind not understanding the assembly line terminology and seeing the video as Body In “Plum Crazy”

We shall see I guess. Now I'm seriously not trying to be an @ss on this topic but ...

The reason I switched from a brand new Ford Explorer ST (13.1 @ 103 w/Ford Performance Tune) to the DSRT was the honking V8 rumble.

So I'm not really getting this EV/Turbo Six Banger road they're going down. Sorry Stellantis ...

I personally will never buy into the EV BS but that’s me! I like the V8 rumble also.

At first, I thought you were calling me a comedian:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

When i see .005", .001" or even .0001", I can immediately wrap my mind around that and understand that value and how much it is, or isn't.

.01mm

WTF is that?!, every time...
