Picked up an elderly neighbor at his wife's nursing home, he said drive around back, we need to look at the tires on a used car one of the aide's recently purchased at a local Acura dealer. We couldn't find it, he couldn't remember the make or color. We went back in and found the aide and she walked us out to the car. She said people told her that one of the tires was bad. And the dealer put a current inspection sticker on it!
I looked at it, they rotated the fronts to back so the worn tires were on the back of this Hyundai AWD SUV. They were worn but still had maybe 5-15k left before hitting the markers, Told her they were legal. She pointed out uneven wear, I said that could be due to poor alignment, poor driving habits, or maybe it was wrecked and poorly repaired. I asked if she saw the carfax. Blank stare.
I asked, if she brought someone who knows cars with her to the dealership, she responded, "I brought my wife".
I told her I wouldn't worry about it, just don't go racing around corners, especially in the rain, she responded, "That's what I do!".
I said if you are really worried take it to Sullivan Tire chain tire place and ask them (they are very good except when the tech took my GTO for a "test drive" and ran it off the road). Blank stare.
She was no longer interested in anything I had to say. My wife says I made her feel stupid.
My elderly neighbor suggested she tell the dealer she is unhappy. I told him that is a good suggestion, but you know they won't do crap, other than offer a "deal" where they will overcharge her for new tires. He knew...
