With this thing randomly changing drive modes while I drive. what if any problems might this cause on my 15 mile drive to the dealership. Could it cause a shut down?

I don't know, but I wouldn't think so.

When my screen acts stupid, the car is still fully roadworthy. I would think you will be fine for a short hop to the stealership.

Update. Well I took it to the Dealer this morning. It was a delamination problem. I parked outside the door at the write up desk and had the screen turned off. And the sun light showed clear that it was delaminating all the way across the top of the screen full width of the top button row. With the screen on you could not see it at all. SO. it is out of warranty, But they have issues with these 2017. So called Customer Care. and they said it was eligible for reimbursement and a representative would contact me after talking to the dealer and let me know what they would take care of.

The screen looks good. I don't see anything wrong with it. The car had not been driven in several months. and when I got it out the other day it was going crazy. The battery had gone down on it, and had to be charged.
Have you tried a hard reset?

Any word on what causes this delamination, and how a guy might try to prevent it?

What I was told it was poor Manufacturing Quality / materials used. My car has always been in the garage, never exposed to sitting in the sun for any period of time. It has seen temp cycles from winter to summer though as my garage is not heated. but even then it is very well insulated, open water stored in it in the winter does not freeze. So no they just go bad.

disconnected the battery negative cable for a few seconds and then reconnected the other day, it had no result. The screen when it is turned off and out in the sunlight you can see what looks like water mark across the top two inches of the screen. It is delaminated. You can't see it when it is on because the line is lined up with the screen line for the buttons perfectly.

Can you replace only the screen, or does the entire unit need to be changed?

Has anybody had any of these go bad on models other than the 2017's? I hope when this is fixed it will never happen again.

The Service writer said he would replace the radio as a unit. See post 36 and 38. apparently you can change out the screens. Service writer said I would need to bring it in, and they would pull the radio and get the numbers of it as it was specific to the model put it back in, would take about an hour or less. And when the replacement coms in repeat the process again. He said he can usually get a radio in a week.

Don't think there is anyway to prevent it, some defect in the adhesive used to glue the screen together. They did state that cars in hot and/or humid environments were more prone to the issue. I'm in FL, so mine went fairly early even tho the car was garaged all the time and not left to bake in the sun.

Very likely! I live in Arkansas. and the temperature and humidity are high most of the time.

I only had to give them my vin to get it replaced in the Charger.

On my 3rd Challenger and a Durango since 2008 with no similar issues.🤨
