And yet Big Oil STILL gets subsidies...100 years later? Someone needs to explain this to me...
They get the same write offs every other industry gets. But you also answered your own question. Why would the Feds make sure and incentivize the production and stable supply of a vital commodity that is used to make virtually everything? Pretty obvious, huh.

Bean counters recounted. Contract negotiations must be going a lot worse than forecast. Look for a new battery plant in Mexico announcement in a year.

Ford Motor is pausing construction of a $3.5 billion battery plant in Marshall, Mich., where it had planned to produce lower-cost cells using technology from a Chinese battery maker.

The U.S. automaker said Monday it was halting work and limiting spending on the factory until it is confident in its ability to operate it competitively. The stoppage is effective immediately, and the company hasn’t made any final decisions about its planned investment.

I ve averaged 55 to 60 hours a week for the past 40 years
20 hours OT = 30 hours pay
$40 X 70 Hrs x 50 weeks = 140K a year
40 years ago it was $5 an hour & living on my own that young was tough
I put a shit load of time in at work for what I have today

There is a lot of money in these contracts aside from just wages
lifetime pension
benefits
cola
bonus
profit sharing
retirement buyout
free legal services
free addition services
Etc etc etc

All of which the average worker will never see

I mentioned before
Get what you can get when you can get it
We all would

PS

FJT
So about 30k american:unsure:

Most employees don't take into consideration the addition of the benefits to their hourly wage. All those added benefits probably add 30 - 40% or more to the burden rate and those costs get passed onto the consumer. Seems like everything the union squeezes from the automobile industry only exacerbates their own demise. Like most industries that can't stay competitive. They will close their doors someday and move elsewhere, or declare bankruptcy and leave all that did the squeezing out in the cold.
Honestly! Where did the union hurt you? So much hatred? I understand not agreeing with what the union is doing but poo pooing every union members for trying to make a better living just because, is plain old hatred.
It’s been explained multiple times in this thread that every union member isn’t making what you keep hearing in the news and what the companies are saying publicly!! Not everyone makes “$300,000” a year as some have said in interviews.
Most WITH required mandatory overtime are make in the 60-80k range if they’re lucky!!!!

There is no hatred, just the sick in the pit of stomach feel from having watched this rodeo before and absolutely knowing it doesn't end well. Well, global trade is breaking down, so maybe we follow the EU and tariff the crap out of all foreign car imports and add a domestic surcharge on all non-union automakers to keep the playing field level.

High tariffs were what worked in the 50’s and 60’s when everything was made in this country, taxes were low, and people lived well on one income. Free trade resulted in cheap goods, high taxes, and global corporations with no patriotic loyalties. Probably no going back, now.

Anything that didn t have tight manufacturing tolerances is long gone to low cost Countries

Not true. In the 50's and 60's, women weren't a major factor in the labor pool because they were at home with the kids. The pill, Paradym change extraordinary, changed all of that and effectively double the labor force, greatly affecting wages, supply/demand. Middle class taxes are actually lower today.

5.3% income tax? Sounds like state income tax. Middle class families pay way more than that to the Feds. We pay close to 50% when all taxes are combined.
